5 Days Mt. Kenya Hike, Mountain Climbing Tour in Kenya
Tour Overview
Mount Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa at 5,199m above sea level. It is an ancient extinct volcano. It offers some of the most rewarding mountaineering on the continent. It has a dramatic scenery, with a variety of wildlife species on its lower plains. To climb Mount Kenya is to experience a feast of the senses. Vertical cliffs, virgin valleys and cascading waterfalls will flank your trail as you explore the best routes on the mountain on this Kenya mountain climbing expedition. Climbers should have experience in Mountain climbing. High altitude experience is not required but recommended. Mountain Madness Alpine Rock Seminar, Red Rocks or custom climbs in the North Cascades are perfect ways to prepare for the climb.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival - Nairobi - Nanyuki
Upon arrival, we leave Nairobi for Mount Kenya, driving north accompanied by our mountain guide. After a drive 2.5 hours, we arrive in Nanyuki where we spend the night in one of the lodges at the foot of Mt. Kenya.
Day 2: Nanyuki - Sirimon track
A short drive in the morning will take us to the Sirimon track. We start our trek up Mt Kenya and walk to Old Moses Camp. This is a 5 hours walk. Overnight at old Moses Camp at 3,400m above seal level.
Day 3: Sirimon track - Mackinder's Valley
Our hike on Mount Kenya today takes us via Mackinder's Valley to Shipton's Camp. This can take us 5 hours. Night at Shipton's Camp at 4,200m above seal level.
Day 4: Mackinder's Valley - Point Lenana
Early in the morning we climb Point Lenana (4,985m above seal level). On a very clear day we should be able to see Mt. Kilimanjaro in the South. From the top we walk down to the Meteorological Station, which can take us 6-7 hours. Night at the Bandas at the Meteorological Station.
Day 5: Point Lenana - Nairobi
After a morning walk we catch the bus/taxi back to Nairobi where we arrive late afternoon.
